what do you do when....?
Posted On 01/13/2009 18:03 by maraluna

i am pretty new here on covenspace and i think i still need to get the lay of the land--so i have a question for all of you:  what do you do when someone writes something in their blog about our pagan ancestors that is clearly untrue?  what do you do when someone is spreading misinformation and garbled lore?  what do you do if someone is writing about their own or other's upg (unverifiable personal gnosis) that could be mistaken as fact?

i have a habit of telling people when they are wrong--most people find this offensive and i don't have an easy time making friends that way.  i am not talking about telling people that there beliefs or practices are wrong, just when they are presenting something as fact that clearly isn't.  unfortunately the largest publisher of pagan literature publishes books with little to no fact checking before hand.  i think a lot of these books are great for getting ritual ideas but they are not so good for finding out about pagan history.

so far i have avoided telling people that they are mistaken--but it gets increasingly frustrating.  i am a quadruple gemini and obsessive reader--the truth is important to me.  but i don't want to offend people or hurt their feelings?  i would love to hear from as many people as possible on this. you don't have to write anything long a simple sentence of "tell them" or "keep your mouth shut" will suffice.  thank you and many blessings.

Just remember that this is a social network, not a classroom. Nobody should expect this to be a library of factual knowledge, though many people do use their blogs as such.

I would suggest you email the person rather than correct them in a public blog comment.

I agree with everyone, try to keep it friendly and sociable, not teacher-ish. One other thing we have to realize is that many of what we know comes from more recent times due to the destruction or lack of any written facts about what our very distant ancestors did. Some of what they write might be about their ancestors in a family tradition and might be factual for them. As with many religions, there are some things that are truth/fact, but many is based on personal preference/experience.

The administrator is right, it's best to do whatever you are going to do in a private email, other than that, I say go for it!  If I were mistaken or misrepresenting something I would want to know that.

Personally I would prefer to be told if I'm posting misinformation.

If you have knowledge, please share it, just try to maintain a friendly approch to avoid sounding condescending.

Love and Blessings
